Rania El-Baz

“I’m satisfied with the episode, I don’t think that Oprah and her producers were mistaken,” said Rania. “I think we are too sensitive about anyone criticizing us and this is our problem. Oprah has presented many episodes before on abused women in the US and other parts of the world. The US is more advanced than us in terms of human rights. Yes, they have higher rates of crime but they accept criticism. Those of us who have traveled to the US, studied there or worked there, know that the American people are very warm and friendly and not biased, so we should not make judgments of people just because we don’t agree with their government’s policies.”

I really cannot understand all this hatred towards this woman and Oprah.
Was anything she said a lie?
Did she say that all Saudi women get beaten by their husbands?
Noor, do you think she planned to make her husband beat her over the years just so she could get rich some day? Please! How are society's ills supposed to be corrected if no one is willing to speak up about it? Women used to be abused a lot more in this country (US) but they would hide it out of shame and live a life of fear. You believe that that is a better thing to do? For the sake of the image of the country? What kind of life do you think the children in those marriages have? The son's of those marriages grow up to be spouse abusers as well and the daughters grow up to marry a wife beater. Only by getting it out in the open are we able to stop this cycle.

Saudi,
So do you get upset when Arab News publishes negative things about people in your country? Should all negative things be kept quiet even if airing it can benefit people by helping to take the shame and stigma off of the innocent or to bring it to people's attention so that it can be stopped? I'm thinking of the maid abuses which seem to be rampant.

I read this article coming from Farah’s blog.. after reading it, and how the reaction is based on pure emotions, I had to go back and search for the profile, hoping to see the age of the writer.. and like I thought.. Saudi, I do appreciate your patriotism for your country, it speaks highly of you really, but with time and more life experience, you probably would start seeing things from outside the box, and hopefully your emotions won’t lead your mind.. please bare with me, I’m not here to flam you or this entry, bil3aks

There is nothing wrong with what you said, and like you hating a woman who was almost beaten to death, and most people would feel sorry for her out of emotion, and others would not like her also out of emotions as well.. we are in the 21st century, even teachers at schools stopped beating students because science proved that it is not helping to build character in anyone, on the contrary, it diminishes any sense of self-esteem, beating someone creates hate in both people, and others witnessing it would also be effected by it.. what her husband did to her is not a solution to any problem.. no one deserves to be beaten like that, no one deserve to beaten period.. there are so many spouses are getting abused right this second I am typing this comment, most of these women (and believe it or not sometimes men as well) think it’s their fault, and not doing anything about it, in your country or anywhere else.. please bare in mind that it’s harder to speak out in your country, because in our society we always try to hide the wrongness because in our society it is (3aib) to let others know or see that she is not a good wife.. some women unlike Rania won’t be so lucky to survive the abuse, and will end up letting go of her last breath thinking it’s her fault to get her face smashed by throwing a table at it.. Speaking about this problem or other taboo problem is not tashwweh to a country, no one is perfect, what she was speaking about is everywhere and in every culture, but the difference we treat the problem by saying “la’a.. we have none”, because our culture tells us to deal with it that way.. loving your country is a great thing, and I salute you for it, but you have to stand to correct the things that are wrong in it, not try to hide the problems so no one would get to see them, and let the problem get bigger.. sometimes we rule by our emotions, and that is definitely not the right way of ruling.. for instance: if someone you know is getting abused and getting kicked the hell out of, you would use your emotions to deal with that problem by turning to hurt the person doing this to the one you know, only to realize with more years under your belt, that taking this person to therapy would probably help him much more thank kicking his @$$ :)

Sorry for the long comment, violence is a serious issue in our society, and we need to expose it, so people would know how common it is, and they would understand it’s not their fault that they are getting beaten everyday.. help solve the problem, not hide it..

Greetings Everyone! I am very surprised at some of the comments here. I think a few people do not grasp what others are protesting about.

A “voice of reason” has said some things on violence and taboo issues I completely agree with, however, although reasonable and well-spoken this person seems to have missed the point of Farah’s article (maybe as a result of prejudice against the young lady’s tender age or of not having watched the mentioned Oprah Winfrey show).

The major issue is not why women abuse in Saudi Arabia was brought into the limelight, it is actually about the WAY it was brought into the limelight. Violence is an extremely serious issue everywhere in this planet (without exception) and it is something that should not be taken lightly. Most decent human beings agree with that.

However, the reason many Arabs (not just Saudi) are infuriated is because Oprah distastefully chose to bring up Rania Albaz’s story when the theme was to “celebrate” women worldwide and to show the variety in cultures. All the women guests from the various countries were beautiful, humorous, interesting, and successful. The theme was quite light and cheerful and did not come close to anything serious… let alone violence.

So why show an extremely misfortunate case from an Arab (Muslim) country? An equally misfortunate guest could have been chosen from India where a large number of men actually BURN their wives alive for money and where no law protects those women (shown on BBC and also on a previous Oprah show). However, since the theme was clearly NOT about violence, Oprah had a very lovely former Indian beauty queen as her guest.

Oprah Winfrey sadly portrayed a ridiculous narrow-minded “American” attitude in her show. As for Rania Albaz, I do not think that anyone human (Saudi or not) believes that she deserved to be abused or hate her for talking about it. However, such an educated woman as herself working in the media field, should have had the common sense of knowing when she’s being exploited and the correct way to expose injustice.

i agree oprah bought the subject up when she shouldnt have, since she found wonderful things about all the other countries, expect SAUDIA... and i do sympathize with her for getting beaten to death but i hate her for the fact that she now looks diffrent then b4, i mean in the headscarf and sheila-wise!! to think that some1 who goes nearby a DEATH EXPERIANCE would actually GET CLOSER TO GOD AND NOT VICE-VERSA!!!!!

btw, wa2el liked ur blog =)

You don't like anyone to tarnish the image of your country? Listen, mate, your country isn't thought of very highly by Muslims and we couldn't give two figs for it were it not for the Haramain. It's been a problem since that Najdi mob took over. What happened to AlBaz was disgraceful, so don't get all upset about the criticism. You ought to look at yourself first before you start criticising...or didn't you know that asabiyya is a sin. Muppet

People like you are the reason Islam is under unfair scrutiny. I can only pray to Allah(SW) that your mother or sister does not get beaten like this.

i agree with voice of reason. that beating a woman or anyone in the 21st century is inhumane/against the law of man and of God. or go back to the age of vlad the impaler. Riana is a tv host and a public property. All of you know what i mean. Abusive people should be placed in the limelight to let them know what shame it will bring them if they abuse anyone.

Rania's husband is a primitive, allowed to beat women because his brutality is sanctioned by a backward-looking theocratic society. His "rationalization" of his animal behaviour is chilling and disgusting. Why is this man not in jail? Why? Because he is protected by weak men like himself.

Thanks for confirming Saudi Arabia's unsuitability to join the ranks of civilised nations.

no women ask to be beat and if u think someone has to love there country and deserve to get beat in the process that is just plain stupid.. no human being GOD created deserves to be beat.. and if u believe in GOD u wouldnt even say u hate her for why do u hate someone whos husband went crazy with anger and couldnt control his own anger and just used her like a punching bag. this isnt one of GODS creations.. God doesnt like ugly and people who take judgement into there owne hands. he is our creator and only he has rights to give and take life.

I don't think ALL Saudi wives get beaten up. I think as long as a woman is prepared to wear the burka, not talk to men, pursue nothing men don't want her too, be happy with complete repression, be nothing but a slave to a man, etc etc, then she can probably get by without being beaten.

That makes Saudi a great place right?

As for the guy that is worried about the image of his country, don't bother. The image of your country throughout the civilised world is that you are a pack of barbarians stuck in the 7th century that has contributed nothing to humanity through achievment and that the luck of having oil under your desert shit hole is the only thing that has saved you from vanishing off the face of the earth......oh....there is one other contribution to humanity Saudi has made.....terrorism. Hey shit.....there you go....your not totally useless after all are you.

I hope anyone that dislikes Rania for capturing the attention of the media should go fucking die. The rest of the world is not as fucking stupid as you. We have personal opinion AND the sense of morality and common sense that though it does happen, it does not happen to all muslim women. You fucking pricks are such narrow minded CUNTS. I hope you get beaten to within an inch of your fucking pathetic lives, see how you handle with it. I think people have a right to know what happens on our earth. Besides, it's your own fault that you allow and even encourage the beating of women. Why don't you use your fucking brains. FIX YOUR FUCKING IMAGE IF YOU DON'T WANT THE WORLD TO THINK NEGATIVELY OF YOU YOU DUMB FUCKING CUNTS.

You only have yourselves to blame.
